The Best Products for Postpartum Healing

Bringing a new baby home is an exciting and life-changing experience, but postpartum recovery can be challenging. Between physical healing, sleepless nights, and caring for your newborn, having the right products on hand can make a huge difference in your comfort and recovery.

After experiencing postpartum recovery myself, I quickly learned that some products were absolute lifesavers. If you’re preparing for your postpartum journey or shopping for an expecting mom, here are some of the best products for postpartum healing.

1.) Peri Bottle

Aperi bottle is one of the most essential postpartum recovery items, especially after a vaginal delivery. Using a peri bottle allows you to gently clean the area without causing discomfort or pain.

Many moms, including me, prefer angled peri bottles because they’re easier to use than the standard hospital ones.

Pro tip: use lukewarm water instead of cold water. I found it to be much more comfortable.

2.) Ice Packs for Postpartum Recovery

Swelling and soreness are very common after delivery. Postpartum ice packs, sometimes called padsicles, provide cooling relief and can help reduce inflammation during the first few days after birth.

The hospital will usually give you a few to take when you’re discharged, but stock up before delivery so you have plenty available when you get home.

3.) TUCKS Pads or Witch Hazel Foam

TUCKS pads or foam can provide soothing relief for soreness and hemorrhoids, both of which are common after childbirth. They’re easy to use and can be layered onto your postpartum pad for additional comfort.

Some moms prefer keeping them in the refrigerator to keep them cool.

4.) Comfortable Postpartum Underwear

The last thing you want during recovery is uncomfortable underwear. Disposable postpartum underwear or high-waisted recovery underwear offers support while accommodating pads and healing incisions.

These were so much more comfortable than my own underwear or the mesh hospital underwear.

Now might also be a good time to mention that if you don’t have a decent size trash can in your bathroom, I would recommend putting one in there.

6.) Nipple Cream & Silverettes

Breastfeeding can be a learning process for both mom and baby. Nipple cream can help soothe dry, cracked, or sensitive nipples during those early weeks. Keeping a tube in your nursing caddy and diaper bag can be incredibly helpful.

Another item that absolutely saved me while nursing were Silverettes. At first I didn’t think these were necessary, but in the early days of breastfeeding it soothed a lot of the pain and keeps your nipples from rubbing the material in your nursing bra.

I liked to put a little bit of nipple cream in the Silverettes before I put them on.

7.) Sitz Bath

A sitz bath can provide soothing relief for soreness and promote healing after delivery. Whether you use a dedicated sitz bath basin or simply soak in a shallow bath, many moms find it helpful during the first few weeks postpartum.

If you don’t have a bathtub they also make ones that can go over your toilet to make it easy.

8.) Large Water Bottle

Hydration is important for every new mom, especially if you’re breastfeeding. Having a large water bottle nearby encourages you to drink enough water throughout the day.

Choose one that’s easy to carry from room to room during those long days with a newborn.
